Most fans think buying a jersey is one decision. It is actually two, and mixing them up is how people overspend. Every official NBA jersey carries a tier (how it is built) and an edition (which design it wears). A City Edition swingman and a City Edition authentic are the same look, and the gap between them is usually $75 or more. This guide explains the NBA jersey types from replica to authentic, the five uniform editions, and which one is the best value if you are shopping NBA jerseys 2026 right now.
The timing matters. Nike’s new NBA Standard Issue Collection drops its first wave on September 15, with a second drop on October 12. Jalen Brunson hosts the Saturday Night Live season premiere on September 26, and the 2026-27 season tips off October 20. Plenty of fans will buy gear in the next five weeks, so it helps to know what you are paying for.
Part One: The Three Jersey Tiers
1. Replica (Fanatics Fast Break): the cheapest official jersey
The Fanatics Fast Break replica is the entry-level official jersey. The graphics are printed rather than stitched, and the fabric is light. Hands-on reviews say it runs true to size, and it is the loosest-fitting NBA jersey you can buy. Stock versions have generally sold for about $45 to $85. It is fully licensed, so it is not a knockoff.
Buy it if: you are buying for a kid who will outgrow it, you want a jersey for a player whose future is uncertain, or you want to buy NBA fan gear for several players without spending a lot.
2. Swingman (Nike): the fan-grade sweet spot
The Nike Swingman is the jersey most fans picture. It has the same colours, team branding and number fonts as the on-court version, but with heat-applied graphics instead of stitched twill and standard Dri-FIT fabric. Nike’s swingman lists at about $120 to $130 and often drops to the $70s on clearance. The cut is slim, so size up if you like a looser drape. Mitchell & Ness also makes swingman jerseys, mostly throwbacks, and its graphics are sewn on.
Buy it if: you want one jersey that looks right, holds up, and doesn’t cost as much as a game-worn spec. For most people this is the best value in any NBA shop online.
3. Authentic (Nike): the on-court spec
The Nike Authentic is built to what players actually wear. It uses premium performance fabric, stitched tackle twill numbers and lettering, and a tailored athletic fit that runs slimmer and longer. Expect $200 and up, with premium builds going higher. We break down the construction in detail in our swingman vs authentic guide.
Buy it if: the player is locked in long term and you plan to keep or frame the jersey. Stitched numbers are permanent, so an authentic is the riskiest jersey to buy for a player who might move.
Part Two: The Five Uniform Editions
Every tier above comes in several designs. Since Nike took over the league’s uniforms in 2017, each team has worn a set rotation of editions:
- Association Edition: the white uniform. It is the most classic look and still a safe first jersey.
- Icon Edition: the team’s main colour. If you picture a team’s “real” jersey, this is usually it.
- Statement Edition: the bold alternate worn for big games. Since the 2020-21 season, all 30 Statement uniforms have carried the Jordan Brand Jumpman logo on the shoulder instead of the Nike swoosh. That’s a quick way to tell a Statement jersey apart.
- City Edition: a yearly design tied to the team’s city or history. These sell fast and often come out on their own schedule, sometimes months into the season.
- Classic Edition: a throwback design worn by select teams in select seasons. It isn’t part of every team’s set.
New for 2026-27: the Specter Edition
Nike and the NBA revealed a brand-new Specter Edition uniform for the league’s eight oldest franchises: the Celtics, Knicks, Warriors, Lakers, 76ers, Hawks, Pistons and Kings. Retail is expected later this fall, and pricing has not been announced. Our Specter Edition explainer covers every design.
One trap to avoid this week: the Standard Issue Collection launching September 15 is hoodies, pants, T-shirts and shorts, not jerseys. Don’t wait for it if a jersey is what you actually want.
The Real Risk: Buying the Wrong Number
The tier decides how much you lose if your player changes numbers. This offseason proved it can happen. Giannis Antetokounmpo was traded to Miami and switched from 34 to No. 7, so early #34 Heat jerseys were wrong within hours. By contrast, LeBron James joined Philadelphia as a free agent and kept No. 23. The rule of thumb: free agents usually keep their number, and traded stars often change it.
If you buy through the official store, Jersey Assurance covers a trade, a trade-driven number change or a free-agency signing for about 90 days, and up to a year on an eligible American Express card. Personalised jerseys are otherwise non-returnable, so check your player’s status before you pay for stitching.
Which NBA Jersey Type Is the Best Value?
- Best overall value: Nike Swingman in Icon or Association. It’s official, durable and roughly $75 or more cheaper than an authentic with the same look.
- Best budget buy: Fanatics Fast Break replica, especially for kids or for a player who could move.
- Best collector piece: Nike Authentic in City or Specter Edition, but only for a player you’re sure will stay put.
